2003-2008 Strategic Plan  
In 2003 the MAA Board and a Planning Committee representing colleagues from Arizona museums, libraries and funders used the New Planning for Results framework to review the organization’s structure and develop six standing committee to carry out MAA’s communications and professional development activities, as well as oversee funding needs, including membership and grants.

2010-2015 Strategic Plan  
In 2009, MAA hired the Vaughan Consulting Group to develop a second strategic plan that resulted in a new Mission Statement along with a highly aspirational sets of Goals and Supporting Initiatives.    

New Mission Statement
The Museum Association of Arizona exists to build a vital museum community.   We strengthen all of Arizona’s museums so they are recognized as essential to the fabric of their communities.   We do this through professional development, advocacy, and the creation of networking opportunities across the state.

MAA Strategic Goals
1. MAA promotes creativity and innovation, and empowers museums to be change agents.
2. Museums are integral and essential to their communities and enjoy broad public support.
3. We are operationally stable and able to support our strategic goals.

MAA Supporting Initiatives
A. Develop/create the MAA Center for Innovation
B. Create a Support Services Function that develops, organizes and promotes tools, methodologies, and services available from MAA to museums across the state.
C. Become a statewide forum for big issues that engage a diverse audience
D. Develop an advocacy function that addresses relevant issues and provides guidance to museums on advocacy
E. Create an engagement structure and process to ensure resources to support strategic goals
F. Extend MAA’s reach and impact by forming strategic partnerships and collaborations
G. Increase and restructure MAA membership

Board Re-Structuring (2015)
In 2015 the MAA Bylaws were amended to replace the three Committee Chairs (Professional Development, Advocacy, and Annual Meeting) with four At-Large Directors.
