Museum Association of Arizona Statement on SB1200

31 Mar 2015 6:38 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

The Museum Association of Arizona (MAA) has tracked the progress of SB1200 through the Arizona Legislature since its introduction in January 2015.  In summary, SB1200 would move $428,300 of ongoing monies from the Arizona Historical Society (AHS) to the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) to pay for rent on the former Mining and Mineral Museum building and a curator to oversee the former museum's collections with the intention of re-opening the museum.

The Museum Association of Arizona supports all museums in Arizona, regardless of funding sources, governance structure, size, or discipline.  It is our mission to build a vital museum community by strengthening all of Arizona‚Äôs museums so they are recognized as essential to the fabric of their communities. We accomplish this through professional development, advocacy, and the creation of networking opportunities across the state.

The Arizona Historical Society and the Arizona Geological Survey have both adopted neutral positions on SB1200.  At this time MAA is also taking a neutral position on SB1200.   We recognize that this bill will not only affect AHS and AZGS, but will have an impact on museums across our state which have borrowed materials from the former Mining and Mineral Museum collection to display in their own institutions.  MAA will continue to monitor the bill's progress and evaluate our organization's position in regard to SB1200.
