Today the words curate and curator are widely used and hotly debated. What does it mean to curate a collection, an exhibition, or a website? Beyond collection work, today’s curator engages the community by fostering  civic, social, and cultural dialogue of ideas and creativity through public examination, interaction, research, interpretation and exhibition of collections. Curators contribute meaningfully to philosophical issues that guide their institutions. Like all competence, curatorial competence is rooted in a meaningful sum of knowledge, experience and skill.

Join local colleagues in Tucson, Flagstaff and Tempe to discuss and learn more about the Curator Core Competencies, created by the AAM Curators Committee (CurCom) Standing Committee on Ethics to address the knowledge, skills, and experience required of curators to be successful in their profession. The Curator Core Competencies goes beyond explaining the functional roles curators perform and the domains in which curators work, stating more definitively what curators are and what they do, and what they must know to advance the practice. These local discussions will focus on three core questions:

  • What does the Curatorial Core Competencies document mean for curators, and the profession?
  • How might the Curatorial Core Competencies document be used in your institution?
  • What are the benefits and challenges associated with implementation of the Curatorial Core Competencies?
